Rescue Blog: Estel and Luna

Estel and Luna

Estel and Luna arrived at the ranch Friday, February 25. They were among 7 very pregnant mares rescued from a feedlot in Nevada. By the time we got there, 48 pregnant mares had already been slaughtered. We were lucky to be able to meet the financial requirements to get Estel and Luna out before they were shipped. The two mares spent almost a week resting in Nevada before making the remainder of the trip.

Estel and Luna

We believe Estel is about 10 months along, and Luna about 7, but it is all a guess. Since both mares are wild, I [Susan] will be spending time with them daily. My goal is to have both of them gentled before their foals arrive. Mares and foals have been lost when emergencies occurred and the wild mare would not let anyone help her or the foal. We take no chances here. We were asked to take these mares because of our ability to gentle wild horses.

UPDATES

04-30-11: Estelle gave birth on April 30th to a gorgeous filly we named Eclipse. Luna is still holding her baby in! Luna is becoming more approachable, Estelle is still extremely scared and wild and will not let anything near or between her and her foal. She shields the foal at all times, even from Luna.
